This blog is useful for hiring managers that want to understand how to effectively reduce their time to hire. Having worked in both internal and agency we have identified the common mistakes and pitfalls, which lead to longer recruitment process.

This blog will provide you with a number of tools to help you to recruit faster and improve your time to hire.

Plan ahead:

There are a number of things that should be decided long before the job advert goes live to ensure a smooth hiring process.  Consider the following:

  • Who will be involved in the sourcing, the interviewing, and the decision-making processes
  • Agree a schedule and timeline with the team, which highlights the agenda for the interviews, panel for each stage, if Psychometric testing is required, and the feedback timescales. This level of planning will ensure that everybody knows their responsibilities before the process even begins.
  • If using external agencies for the role, consider limiting the number to ensure you can spend time effectively communicating the process with the consultants, so they can ensure the candidate is brought on the journey throughout.

1- Streamline the interview process

Having a clear structure from the offset in terms of the process, the panel and the number of rounds, in stills confidence in the candidates that the company they are interviewing for, are on top of there game and valuing there time partaking in the process.  Too often, clients forget that the candidate also needs to want the role, not simply qualify for it, as typically good candidates are excelling in their current role and will be selective in taking a new position. Ensuring the candidate experience is enjoyable, reduces the likelihood of a negative outcome/counter offer.

2- Know your budget and USPs

Take your initial salary budget and put an additional 10% aside. You should do your research and ensure you’re aware of the average salaries for the role you’re recruiting for to avoid paying too little, or even too much. Before bring any candidate into the process, it's important to understood if there remuneration expectations can be met. Working with a trusted recruitment partner who understands your business, the market and your typical budgets, can remove the level of thought needed here.

Just as important is your USPs (unique selling points) as a business and within the role itself. The engineering marketplace is extremely competitive, and if you’re offering a generous salary, it’s likely your competitors are too. So what elements of the role, or working for your business, will make the engineer choose you over anywhere else? Long gone are the days of just the candidates needing to be the ones selling themselves, it’s now just as important for businesses to do the same. Ensure you have these things outlined beforehand to speed up the recruitment process and increase the chances of the engineer choosing your business.
