DataCenter Developments - Energia Group subsidiary Huntstown Power Company is looking to build two data centres next to the Huntstown Power Station in Dublin. Planning has been filed for a three-story buildings, known as Buildings A and B, would have a gross floor area of c. 37,647 sqm (400,000 sq ft) each. As well as demolishing two residential dwellings, the data centre development would also include a 220kV substation, which the company is submitting plans for separately. The data centers would be built over a ten-year period. Huntstown Power Station is a 742-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant in County Dublin. The plant can provide up to 20 percent of Ireland’s total energy needs. Energia is also developing a biogas plant on the site.
Renewable Acquisition - Irish engineering group Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG), which specialises in flood defence systems and wind-energy installations, has been acquired by Venterra, a newly formed UK company for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition will lead to the creation of 230 new jobs, predominantly in Ireland, over the next three years.
Irish Data Center Developer - Dataplex has filed to change the use of its existing building space in a property in Clonshaugh. The project will involve changing the warehousing and storage space within the existing building to data storage use and the construction of a 980 sqm (10,500 sq ft), two-story extension for data storage use. The expansion follows recent annoucmenets of investment from Dubai based conglomerate DAMAC.
Gigabit Rollout - A major expansion of Gigabit fibre broadband to an additional 320,000 homes and businesses has been announced by Siro. The investment of €620 million means that Siro will double its footprint and will deliver fibre broadband to 770,000 homes and businesses overall, reaching 154 towns and serving 2.1 million people. This rollout does not form part of the national broadband plan.
$80 Billion deal within Reach - Ireland is weeks away from learning whether it has secured a $80bn foreign direct investment project from chipmaker Intel which will in time create up to 10,000 jobs. The $80bn investment involves Intel building up to eight so-called modules worth €10bn each. This means that over a number of years any new site would host up to 10,000 manufacturing jobs. It is the largest ever investment by Intel which will have invested $22bn in Ireland by the time it completes the latest expansion at Leixlip next year. Its Irish workforce, which will grow to over 6,500 when the 1,600 new jobs at Leixlip come on stream, could in time swell to 16,500 if Ireland were to secure the huge project.
Expanding Irish Amazon Footprint - Amazon has filed for permission to build two more data centers in Dublin. The filing is to grant permission to demolish the existing former Ricoh building and construct two data center buildings – Data Centre A and Data Centre B.
Sustainability recognition - Hines Cherrywood Development has come first in Europe in the Sustainability Benchmark Award. The Cherrywood development in south Dublin has scooped the top ranking in Europe and achieved Global Sector Leader status for the second year running, attaining an overall score of 96 out of 100 and received a 5-star rating for its 1,300-unit mixed-use development.
Data Center Legalities - An application for permission to bring two new legal challenges to moves by Apple to keep alive its plan for its €850 million data centre in Athenry, Co Galway, will be heard next month. The latest challenge centres on a decision last August by Galway County Council to grant Apple Distribution International Ltd a five-year extension to its previous 2016 planning permission for the data centre on the 202-hectare site which was due to expire in September.
