Here at Elusav Recruitment, information is key, and we always strive to maintain our knowledge on all key activity happening in the market.

We have compiled some key highlights over the past 7 days and listed the key “take aways” below. If you would like to learn more about any of the topics, a list of references and links to full articles are listed below. Our key highlights are released weekly, so be sure to follow our LinkedIn Page to be notified of all new releases.

Irish Data Centers Continue - The Commission for Regulation of Utilities, which is responsible for regulating energy and water in Ireland, will not be imposing a moratorium at this time on new data centres connecting to the national grid. However, it has reserved the right to put one in place in the future if it deems it a necessary move to “protect security of supply”. Instead, the CRU is directing EirGrid and the ESB Network to implement a specific set of assessment criteria for processing data centre grid connection applications.

Shell Joins Irish Floating Wind Project - Multinational oil and gas company Shell has agreed to acquire a 51% stake in a joint venture to develop a floating wind farm off the Clare coast. The partners aim to co-develop up to 1.35GW of floating wind capacity in the Atlantic Ocean, 35-60km off County Clare where the water depths exceed 100 meters. The agreement is the second between Blue Energy and Shell after the two joined forces earlier this year on the Emerald Project off the South coast. The project will utilize floating offshore wind technology to produce zero carbon electricity and will greatly help Ireland progress towards a green energy future.

Offshore Wind - A Singapore-based offshore wind developer - Enterprize Energy has signed an agreement to build a huge $10 billion (€8.88 billion) wind farm off the coast of Ireland to power a green hydrogen facility. Enterprize Energy’s 4-gigawatt wind farm will supply electricity for hydrogen production and consumption in Ireland, or for conversion into ammonia that can be exported.

Dublin Port Expansion - Dublin Port has launched a €400 million project that will include, A new private road linking the north and south port areas to take HGVs off the public road via a new bridge across the River Liffey just east of the Tom Clarke Bridge, Building the largest container terminal in the country in front of the Poolbeg Power Station with an annual throughput capacity 612,000 TEU, more than twice the number of containers handled in all other ports in the country last year,  Revamping the existing blue container terminal to create a new Ro-Ro freight terminal with an annual throughput capacity of 288,000 freight trailers; Creating a 325-metre-diameter ship turning circle in front of Pigeon House Harbour.   Construction will begin in 2026 and be completed between 2030 and 2035.

Wastewater  Wicklow - Irish Water is starting a major investment in Roundwood to upgrade the water supply. Works will involve the construction of 4km of new water mains and ancillary works along the R764 in Roundwood to the new, state-of-the art, water treatment plant in Vartry, reducing future issues associated with water quality and providing the community of Roundwood with a secure, safe and robust water supply. The project, which is being carried out by Ward & Burke under Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, is scheduled to begin this week and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2022.

Sustainable Materials - Material Evolution, an Irish-founded company that has developed “algorithmic concrete”, which is five times more durable than traditional concrete, has secured $3.4 million (€3 million) in investment. Founded in 2017, Material Evolution uses patented geopolymer technology and proprietary algorithms to create more sustainable materials. The company is focused on creating a sustainable alternative to ordinary concrete through the development of geopolymers. It has developed a product that is made from 95 per cent industrial waste which is stronger and more durable and reduces the carbon consumption of concrete by 85 per cent, when compared with equivalent products.

Social Housing - The construction of more than 850 social and affordable homes on one of Dublin City Council’s largest sites, has been approved by councilors, almost eight years after it was first proposed. A deal with developer Glenveagh will see 853 homes built at Oscar Traynor Road in Santry, 40 per cent of which will be used for social housing, 40 per cent for cost rental homes, and 20 per cent sold to low- and middle-income workers qualifying for the upcoming affordable purchase scheme.

Louth Solar - Eirgrid and ESB Networks have released the full list of renewable energy projects to receive grid connection offers in Ireland through their enduring connection policy (ECP) process, with solar PV representing the majority of these. This includes a 185MW hybrid solar-plus-storage site in Louth under development from Strategic Power Projects. The Monvallet project is split into 50MW of PV and 135MW of battery storage, with the storage element to provide system services and security of supply to the grid. Strategic Power Projects is also currently collaborating with Gresham House to develop a solar and storage pipeline with a combined capacity of over 1GW, with these to be located across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

€1.5 Billion Energy JV   - Coillte and the ESB are set to establish a new joint venture company, FuturEnergy Ireland, which is aiming to deliver a €1.5 billion renewable energy project. The project has the potential to generate up to one gigawatt of onshore wind energy by 2030.
