  • Energy Storage ESB & dCarbonX announced plans of a new Hydrogen storage facility in Cork. The aim is to have the ability to store up to 10% of Irelands current Electricity consumption which equals to circa 3TWh. The project aims to repurpose decommissioned gas reservoirs for green hydrogen, which in turn can be used for sustainable and long lasting, low carbon energy storage. [1]

  • Solar Power  Solar Power developer - BNRG has signed a €39m deal with Paris-listed renewable energy business Neoen for three projects in Irelands, as part of larger €500 Million investment, with the view in time to invest in generating 1.GW of Renewable Projects worldwide. The three projects in Ireland will be located in Kildare, and Wicklow, with a total capacity of 58MW – providing enough electricity for about 12,700 homes [2]

  • Data Centre Objections have been made over a proposed €1.2 Billion Data centre development in county Clare. Environmental activist groups which include Futureproof Clare, Extinction Rebellion Clare, and the Clare Environmental Network object to the energy centre, which consists of 18 lean-burn natural gas turbines.  The groups concerns surround the use of gas as an energy source, and its impact on the environment. If planning is approved for the site, it would create 1200 temporary jobs during construction, and 250 in the data center for the region. [3]

  • Housing According to a report by Irish Institutional Property, nearly 50,000 homes per annum are required to meet Irelands needs, as the population is predicted to increase to 6.5 million people by 2050.  With only 22,000 house completions forecast for 2021, and 26,000 for 2022, it raises concerns around Irelands ability to meet demand.  The report calls for reform in the housing policy to ensure affordable or social housing can be availed by all. The report claims on our current trajectory, Ireland will be reliant on private investor/Foreign Direct investment of €75bn over the decade to increase housing from 20,000 units to 45,000 units.

  • Construction Costs According a report carried out by global professional services consultancy Turner & Townsend, Dublin ranks 12th most expensive construction market in the world, and 3rd in Europe @€2,400 per sqm. This is a fall from 7th place in the previous report, however this is largely due to the fall in demand due to Covid. Its predicted the price of construction in Dublin will increase by 7.5% in 2021 alone, and the price increase will be sustained through 2022 to 2023  according to the ICMS Forecasts [5]

  • Acquisition  Engineering services firm CJK announced that it would create 100 jobs over the next three years following the acquisition of fellow Dublin company McGrattan & Kenny. The two companies will retain their existing staff, and will also be looking to hire mechanical and electrical tradespeople, as well as engineering, operations and admin workers.
