€500 Interconnector Project -   Siemens Energy and Sumitomo Electric have won the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the 500MW Greenlink electricity interconnector project. The project investment is expected to exceed €500m. The scope of the works will cover the delivery of 190 km subsea and underground electricity interconnector to connect the power grids of Ireland and the UK mainland. It will also include two converter stations, a tail station at Great Island in Wexford and onshore cable works in Wexford and Pembrokeshire, Wales. The works are due to be initiated in 2022, with the view to commissioning in 2024.  The infrastructure project will play a key role in energy stability and security in the future.

AstraZeneca Boost  - Following on from the 2020 Acquisition of Alexion, AztraZenanca announced its 1st manufacturing investment in Ireland with its plans to invest €300 million in the build of a manufacturing plant in Dublin.  The new build will result in the creation of 100 highly skilled direct jobs. The new manufacturing facility which will be located on the Alexion College campus and will manufacture next-generation active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) or small molecules. The new plant will significantly reduce commercialisation lead times, costs and introduce more sustainable manufacturing processes. The design of the plant will also allow for additional future capability to manufacture a wide range of medicines, including new modalities such as antibody-drug conjugates and oligonucleotides.

Affordable Housing Limerick - A plan to develop up to 2,800 “affordable homes” was launched this week by the Land development Agency (LDA), for a large urban development in Limerick city, which will include parklands, commercial spaces, and sustainable transport links on State lands. The redevelopment would be the largest-ever transfer of State land for housing and includes major strategic sites in Limerick’s Colbert Station, including lands owned by CIE and the HSE.

Renewable Targets Ireland – Wind Energy Ireland raised concerns this week over the likelihood of Ireland meeting its 2030 target of 5,000 Megawatts of energy being produced by offshore Wind Energy. So far Ireland only has 1 offshore windfarm in Ireland which produces 25 MW of energy, and an additional 7-10 windfarms of the south and east coast would be required to achieve these targets.  Wind Energy Ireland have stated “urgent action” needed on the planning process to ensure the current pipeline of projects can be achieved.

Heat for Houses - an Amazon data centre located close to the centre of Tallaght in South Dublin will be used to provide heat to local homes and offices. The heat from the data centre will be distributed by pipes around the centre of Tallaght and will be piped to the council headquarters at County Hall, the local library, and to the Tallaght campus of the Technology University Dublin.  It will l also be provided to 133 affordable apartments and an innovation centre for hosting tech start-ups -- both to be built on the same site on public land. The project will cost €9 million euro and will be one of many projects in Dublin as part of a larger district heating programme.
